300 weatherby

picked up a (weatherby Acumark mark V ) in 300 weatherby. And topped it with a zeiss conquest Z-600. This set up is awsome second time to the range and shot a three shot group inside an inch and a half at 200 yds. 165 spire point.

Great gun! You should try throwing some 180 grain partitions down the tube and see what ya think.

I have the same gun and love it. It shoots just as good with factory ammo as my other rifles shoot with reloads.

Nice gun, but think you may have some issues with the Z600 reticle and the big 300's trajectory. Better matched up for the 800.

Love my Mark V 300, since 1992.  I shoot the 180 Partitions as well.

My kid (in orange) dropped this Montana mulie at 407 yds with my 300 Wthrby and 180 gr Noslers, from a prone position after quick shots at shorter distance but less solid rest.  We're zeroed at 300 for the Montana trips.

I was going to load up some 168 gr Bergers.  I'll only be hunting mule deer there, and was figuring for faster speeds in the open country.  Do you think 180 grains are a better choice?

Better is certainly open to discussion.

180's in my gun shoot a very tight group and I prefer to have the additional weight when hunting open country and the large deer you find in Montana.

The Berger's would undoubtedly do the job.  See how they shoot in your gun, the choice is up to you.

I like the 180 as a universal round and have taken elk, deer, and black bear with it.  The only time I changed my zero was when I knew I was hunting bears and the shot would definitely be under 100 yds.  Otherwise I leave it zeroed at 300 yds and know I can spend some time at the range each year to make sure it is on and then take it for whatever I am hunting around the west.

I do use a 340 Wthrby with 210gr Partitions when hunting elk only in New Mexico though.

hmmm.... good point.  It was pretty windy there last year.  180s would hold their accuracy in a stiff wind better...  Thanks for the food for thought.

I have a 300 accumark and we shoot 180 grain accubonds by nosler.

Yeah that's why I suggested the 180's. Pretty efficient all around bullet for really any game here in WA. I have a .270 wby mag for the 165's You got to love how a .300 wby kicks though!

Check the Weatherby Accubrake chart on the link here, to see what the felt recoil energy is.  I don't have the Accubrake on most of my Weatherby rifles but I did put it on my .378 Wtherby Mag., 71 foot lbs was a bit much.

The 300's 39 foot lbs is acceptable for me.

Well, you guys are  monsters then.  It bugs me.  I didn't install a muzzlebrake yet (don't want to ruin my dad's vintage gun), but I sure as hell put a synthetic stock with a limbsaver recoil pad on it.  That helped some. 
Nothing like spending $3 and getting the $#@ knocked out of you every time you touch the trigger...

I hear you.  Don't get me wromg, I know they kick.  Just another reason once it's set, I just run a couple rounds through it before each hunt.
